ChatGPT is more useful when you give it the same brief you would give a capable colleague: the job, the context, the audience, the limits, and the format.
Before: “Write a customer update.”
After: “Write a 150-word customer update for users of a freelance invoicing app. Explain that invoice sharing is now live. Keep it plain, friendly, and specific. Do not promise faster payments. End with one sentence telling users where to try it.”
The improved prompt works because it removes the blank spaces: ChatGPT knows what changed, who is reading, the length, the tone, and what not to claim.
For research or analysis, add a verification rule: “Separate sourced facts from suggestions. Link every source. Mark anything uncertain.” For repeatable work, show the exact output shape you want.
Before: “Turn these notes into tasks.”
After: “Turn these notes into a task list. Use Owner | task | due date. Do not invent owners or dates; write Unassigned or No date when missing.”
Ask for one job at a time, review important facts, and improve the prompt after you see where the first answer missed.
