GatherOS?
BUILD FIRST
- One specific customer type and one primary use case
- A vertical slice that completes the main job without manual workarounds
- Visible limits, review steps, and a fallback when an external dependency fails
LEAVE FOR LATER
- Broad third-party integrations
- High-scale collaboration, syncing, and permissions
- Automation that can cause harm without human review
RESEARCH NOTES
What this tool actually does.
GatherOS is a native, local-first Mac app for capturing, organizing, and searching design inspiration, with an optional browser companion extension for Chrome. Designers drag, paste, or screenshot images directly into a local library rather than uploading to cloud storage. The extension lets users save images, pages, regions, full-page screenshots, or links while preserving source URLs; saving from X, Instagram, or Cosmos syncs media and text into the library. The app provides AI-powered visual similarity search, dominant-color filtering, auto-tagging, unlimited libraries for per-client or per-project organization, and a 'rediscover' mode that resurfaces older saves. Everything remains on the machine as real files. The product site lists no Windows or web client; pricing is currently free. Developer: Brett Williams (Sun City, AZ). RESEARCHED BUILD PROMPT
Give this to your coding agent.
Build a focused replacement for the core GatherOS workflow: a desktop app for local-first visual reference collection and retrieval for designers. Workflow: the user captures an image by dragging a file in, pasting from clipboard, or taking a screenshot; the app stores the image plus its source URL (if provided) as a real local file with metadata; later, the user finds the image by (a) providing a reference image and retrieving visually similar results, (b) selecting a dominant color and filtering the library by image palette, or (c) typing a query that matches auto-generated tags. Implement with: file-watcher/indexed local storage (e.g., SQLite for metadata, original files on disk), a client-side embedding model (e.g., CLIP via ONNX or local ML) for visual similarity, simple color-histogram extraction for dominant-color filtering, and a rule/keyword tagger plus optional local LLM for auto-tagging. Use a minimal, uncluttered desktop UI with a capture sidebar, grid-based library, and similarity/color filter modes. Explicitly do not copy GatherOS branding, name, logo, or exact UI layout. Out of scope: cloud sync, collaborative boards, web/app stores, mobile clients. Provide a README covering setup, local model requirements, storage format, and important limitations (e.g., first-time embedding latency, single-user scope, no server-side backups).
