CAN I VIBECODE

Obsidian Sync?

YESA focused first version is a sensible AI-assisted build. Keep the first release narrow and polish the workflow people repeat.

BUILD FIRST

  1. One defined user and a repeatable end-to-end job
  2. A small, clear data model with sign-in only if it is genuinely needed
  3. Loading, empty, error, and success states that make the workflow feel complete

LEAVE FOR LATER

  1. Large integration marketplaces
  2. Multi-region scale and enterprise administration
  3. Every power-user setting from the established product

RESEARCH NOTES

What this tool actually does.

Checked 2026-09-06

Obsidian Sync keeps local Markdown vault folders synchronized across devices through a remote vault. Official help pages describe offline-first local copies, file-level transfer, selective sync, sync status and logs, version history, and conflict choices including automatic Markdown merging or separate conflict files. Git and Syncthing are documented as alternative sync approaches.

RESEARCHED BUILD PROMPT

Give this to your coding agent.

Build a focused local-first Markdown-folder synchronizer for a single user with two trusted devices. Do not copy Obsidian's brand, proprietary assets, or UI.

Core workflow
- Let the user choose a vault folder, register named devices, and select one explicit transport: a Syncthing-style peer folder or a Git remote with pull/push. Keep the transport behind an adapter so the choice is replaceable.
- Watch .md files and a small allowlist of attachments, calculate file hashes, sync only changed files, and show per-file plus overall status: local changes, queued, synced, offline, conflict, and error.
- Detect when the same Markdown file changed on both sides. Offer a safe three-way merge with a diff view or create a clearly named conflict copy; never silently overwrite. For unsupported/binary files, use an explicit last-write or manual-review policy and document it.
- Make privacy visible: local-only mode, remote path/host, encryption responsibility, ignored folders, pause/resume, logs, and a dry-run preview. Keep a restoreable snapshot before applying a merge.

Implementation and scope
- Start with a desktop CLI plus small settings/status UI. Use Git or Syncthing rather than inventing a hosted sync protocol; include fixture folders for deterministic conflict tests.
- Out of scope: a Markdown editor, mobile clients, online collaboration, shared public vaults, plugin marketplace, hosted account system, enterprise administration, and end-to-end-encryption claims unless independently implemented and audited.
- Explicitly exclude .obsidian/plugin data and generated caches by default.

Include a README with setup, transport choice, conflict semantics, privacy model, backup warning, and important limitations.
