CAN I VIBECODE

Shopify?

NOT REALLYA prototype of the interface is possible, but the durable product depends on difficult systems beyond the UI. Build a safer adjacent workflow instead.

BUILD FIRST

  1. A non-sensitive or read-only version of the core experience
  2. A manual review step wherever correctness or trust matters
  3. A narrow companion tool that removes a real piece of work

LEAVE FOR LATER

  1. Regulated decisions, payments, or irreversible actions
  2. Claims of correctness, compliance, or uptime that the MVP cannot support
  3. Sensitive integrations until security, support, and auditability are ready

What this tool actually does.

Shopify is a cloud-hosted, all-in-one commerce platform for selling online and in person. Merchants sign up, receive a myshopify.com subdomain, and build a storefront from 200+ free/paid themes (or AI-generated themes) using the Online Store Editor. Products need only a title and price; merchants add descriptions, media, variants, inventory, tags, and metafields, and group them into collections. Shopify Checkout accepts major payment methods, offers one-tap Shop Pay, validates inventory, and holds stock only at payment submission. Orders flow to shipping (labels, tracking, discounted rates), fulfillment (Shopify Fulfillment Network/3PL), and Shopify POS for in-person sales with synced inventory. Merchants extend stores via 8,000+ apps, sell on social and marketplaces (Instagram, TikTok, Amazon, eBay, Etsy), and manage tax and finances. Developers customize with Liquid themes, Hydrogen/Ox

RESEARCHED BUILD PROMPT

Give this to your coding agent.

Build "Cartwright," a self-hosted single-merchant commerce platform inspired by Shopify's core workflow — not a clone. Workflow: a merchant registers, gets a store subdomain, creates products (title, price, description, images, variants, stock), groups them into collections, picks a responsive theme, publishes a storefront, and processes orders through a checkout that validates stock, collects shipping and payment details, and creates orders with statuses (pending, paid, fulfilled, cancelled). The admin dashboard shows orders, inventory, and basic revenue analytics.

User-facing requirements: storefront with product listing/detail pages, cart, checkout, and order confirmation; admin for products, collections, orders, inventory, and settings; at least two selectable themes; responsive mobile layout.

Technical requirements: Node.js + Express (or Next.js) backend, SQLite/Postgres storage, REST API for admin and storefront, session/JWT auth for admin, seeded demo catalog, order state machine, stock decrement on payment, CSV product import/export.

Implementation approach: server-rendered storefront with a simple template engine; admin as server-rendered CRUD pages; single-page checkout flow; a mock payment gateway stub — do not integrate real payment providers.

Do not copy Shopify's brand, logo, theme designs, Liquid, or UI; use original naming and styling. Out of scope: multi-tenant SaaS, real payment gateways, shipping label printing, POS, marketplace/social integrations, app store, AI features, and headless APIs.

Deliver a README covering setup (env vars, DB migration, seed), run instructions, and important limitations (single merchant, mock payments, no real shipping).
